(Excerpt for starmag)
WHENEVER you pull up at a service station to fill up the tank, the number that matters most is the price of the petrol.

But of late, a number that has been attracting nervous attention is RON95, a new petrol grade that will be launched ofhcially on Sept 1.

While RON, or Research Octane Number, has been around for a long time, especially in the form of RON92 and RON97, most motorists don’t pay much attention to it.

For the uninitiated, octane numbers refers to the ability of the fuel to resist self—igniting in the combustion chamber before the spark plug fires. lf that happens, the engine will experience "knocking” and become rough; this could possibly damage the engine over time.

Petrol that has a higher RON rating (or number) will have a stronger resistance to causing knocking compared with petrol with a lower RON rating.

But do all engines need to use the fuel with the highest RON rating? The answer is a simple no.
According to Chevron product engineering manager (Asia-Pacific) Greg Engeler, all engines are designed to run on the minimum RON rating petrol recommended by their manufacturers.

"If your manufacturer specifies that the minimum requirement is RON95, using RON97 will not harm the engine. But you might end up paying more without getting any gain in performance.

"However, using fuel with a lower-than—recommended RON rating can cause engine damage," he said at a media briefing on RON95 at the company’s Pulau lndah installation in Port Klang recently.

Come Sept 1, RON92,‘now priced at RMl.70 per litre, will be phased out and replaced by RON95, which will cost 5 sen more.

The other grade, RON97, will continue to be sold but its price will be increased by 20 sen per litreto RM2.
To know your car's RON rating, just look up the owner’s manual or at the inside of the fuel lid of your car's fuel tank.

Engeler said modern engines with knock sensors could run on fuel with as low RON rating, as the engines can adjust their spark timing automatically to eliminate the knocking.
"However, the car’s fuel consumption, driveability, and power may be affected," he said.
Using the right RON rating fuel based on the engine’s design and tuning will maximise vehicle performance.

Engeler said about 84% of petrol sales in Europe is that of RON95 and 85% of sales in Japan are RON89 and RON90.

"Since the majority of cars in Malaysia are using engine technologies from Europe and Japan, the introduction of RON95 should not pose problems for local motorists," he said.

Proton, whose cars easily form the bulk of the passenger cars on local roads, says that all its models, whether fitted with carburettor or the latest Campro CPS engines, can run on RON95.

However, the Malaysian car maker did indicate that some of its earlier carburettor-equipped models, depending on the condition of the engines, might experience some knocking.

Owners can solve the problem by getting the ignition timing of their cars adjusted at Proton-authorised service centres.

Perodua cars are even better off, with most models already tuned to run on RON90, meaning that owners can save 10 sen by using RON92 instead of the more expensive RON97. Again, if in any doubt, refer to the car’s manual.

Even imported cars like Toyota and Kia are ready to run on RON95.

Chevron Malaysia country chairman Jeremy Oh said owners do not have to wait until their tanks are near empty before filling up with RON95 petrol.

"Fuels of different RON ratings can be mixed safely without causing any harm to the engine," he said.
He also said many owners whose vehicles could operate on RON95 or below were using the more expensive RON97.

"The higher RON number does not mean that the fuel is more powerful. Vehicles that require a higher octane fuel are usually sports cars or those with turbo-charged engines.

"In any case, RON97 will still be in the market if your vehicle really needs fuel of that grade to perform at peak performance" he said.

Chevron Malaysia, which has over 420 Caltex service stations around the country, will be offering RON95 at selected service stations even before the official switch—over to RON95 on Sept 1.

Some BHP in Klang Valley already got RON95 at price RM1.75 / litre. This morning I pump in BHP Infinity 95 at BHP Taman Tun Dr. Ismail KL. Pump RM50 and got 28.57 Litre compare to RON 97, if pump in RM50 will got about 27.77 litre. So save around RM1++ lah for RM50. Will monitor how's the performance. Last time I pump in Petronas RON95 at Putrajaya, my mileage not as good as before.

Just finished my BHP infiniti RON 95 on last saturday. Pump RM50 and went back to my hometown using a normal road. Total Mileage 300 - 310KM. For me this BHP RON95 suit with my engine and in term of performance, no different at all with RON97.

A good RON for the money

The national oil company sets out to educate the public ahead of the introduction of RON 95 fuel on Sept I

WITH slightly more than a week to go before the new RON 95 petrol grade is introduced nationwide, Petronas is into its final leg of educating the man—on-the-street on the compatibility of the new fuel grade with the majority of cars.

Much doubt over the suitability of RON 95 with most cars has been erased in the run up to the official Sept 1 launch as many motorists are already warming up to the new grade as their preferred choice of petrol.

To re-cap, RON refers to Research Octane Number, an industry classification that measures the petroI’s resistance to self-igniting in the combustion chamber before the spark plug fires. If the fuel self—ignites, the engine will expenence "knocking" and become rough, and this could possi- bly damage the engine over time. Petrol that has a higher RON rating will have a stronger resistance to self—igniting than those with a lower RON rating.

With the official introduction of RON 95 grade at RM1.75 per litre on Sept 1, the older RON 92 grade will be phased out. The other higher RON 97 grade now priced at RM1.80 per litre will be reclassified as premium fuel and cost 20sen more.

Petronas Dagangan Bhd, the retail arm of the national oil corporation, recently rounded up a wide range of popular and premium cars for the media to test its RON 95 grade called Primax 95. The vehicles used for the test, which covered a 350km distance from Shah Alam to Malacca and back, were the Honda Civic 1.8, Honda City 1.5, Naza 206 Bestari, Kia Optima, Kia Sportage, BMW 320i, BMW 525i, Peugeot 407 and Proton Exora.

We had an opportunity to drive the BMW 525i and the Honda Civic 1.8 running on Primax 95 and we can surmise that there were no issues with either, the engines in both cars running smooth and with good response. "From our research, the majority of cars on Malaysian roads are able to operate well on RON 95. "However, they should check their owner’s manual for their car’s recommended RON rating," Petronas Research Bhd fuel section principal researcher Fazil Mat Isa said at the media test drive. Fazil said Primax 95 came with a new Sinar G-07 additive that contained a friction modifier and combustion improver to protect engine components and enhance overall engine efhciency. The additive also replenishes the friction modifier of the engine lubricant for smoother running. In addition, Sinar G-07 also has synthetic detergent to prevent the build—up of deposits that affects engine performance.

Besides undergoing 80,000km of vehicle testing for highway, urban and sub—urban driving conditions, Primax 95 had also been tested on BMW 3—Series and Vauxhall Astra cars at the Millbrook Proving Ground in Britain, one of the largest vehicle testing centres in Europe. "The tests results showed that the Astra running on the Primax 95 returned some 3% better fuel economy compared to using typical Malaysian commercial petrol. The BMW 3—Series, which had a more sophisticated engine, gave more than 4% improvement in fuel economy," Fazil said. Primax 95 also meets the Euro 2M emission standards and has been formulated with a reduced sulphur content of 500 parts per million, in—line with the national oil corporation’s aim for a cleaner envi- ronment.

Petronas Penapisan Melaka Sdn Bhd managing director Nur Iskandar A Samad said Petronas refineries in Malacca and Kertih were capable of producing fuels with low suphur content of 50 parts per million to 5 meet Euro 4M standards. Petronas Dagangan senior general manager (retail business division) Mohd Fadzlan Abdul Samad said Primax 95 accounted for 80% of petrol sold at the company’s stations which had been selling the Primax 95 ahead of the official launch next month. •

Petronas Dagangan has five stations that are already selling Primax 95 — two in Putrajaya and one each in Shah Alam's Section 13, Kepong’s Middle Ring Road 2 and Bandar Mahkota, Cheras. The company has some 920 stations nationwide.

"So far, sports cars might require petrol with higher RON rating for optimum performance. In that respect, owners should use RON 97 petrol," Fadzlan said.

Expect more power and economy

BHPETROL recently launched its RON 95 grade petrol called infiniti95 2X which promises drivers both extra mileage and power. BHPetrol managing director Tan Kim Thiam said infiniti95 2X is unique as it has an additive content of 800 parts per million, double the dose recommended by the additive manufacturer. The additive package comprises leading edge detergent and anti-corrossion components together with a friction modifier.

"The detergent cleans engine deposit build up while the friction modifier reduces friction in the moving parts, thus further contributing to a reduction in fuel consumption," he said at the petrol grade’s launch at BHPetrol service station at Sungai Kayu Ara, here. Priced at RM1.75 per litre, infiniti95 2X is suitable for all cars currently running on RON 92 grade petrol.

Most cars can operate on RON 95 grade but owners are advised to refer to their car manual or refuelling caps for the recommended grade. BHPetrol also sells RON 97 grade petrol under the infiniti97 2X name which contains the same additive package with the infiniti95 2X at all its 300 service stations.

Other petroleum companies are also in tune to gradually introduce their RON 95 grade ahead of Sept 1. Last week, Chevron Malaysia launched its RON 95 grade called Premium 95 with Techron while Esso Malaysia’s is called Synergy 5000.
