in my opinion, all major brands laptop are about the same. most important is the after sales service. every brand will have their supporter and detractor... there's no perfect laptop. i suggest to go for one where u can easily get after sales support. |

All the software you need you can always get someone to install for you or unless are good enough to do that yourself. If you need help I think we have a lot of members here with good knowledge which can guide you online. Do worry we are here to help............. ;) |

When buying laptop, these are the few considerations. Once you find out your preferance, then you can choose the right model: 1. the weight of the laptop. If carry a lot, might prefer a lighter one, but normally lighter is more expensive. Normal weight is around 2kg-2.5kg. Less than 2kg is very light, and more than 2.5kg is a bit heavy. 2. the screen size. If you use for long hour, better get a bigger size. If you travel a lot and use for short hour, get a smaller size. The screen size is also proportional to the keyboard size (laptop keyboard is normally very crampped, bigger is better) and the weight (lighter laptop is normally smaller in size). Normal range is around 12" to 17". Most people prefers 14". 3. processor. AMD or Intel? Single core or duo core? 4. operating system. XP or Vista? 5. memory. Nowadays should get 1GB or above, better get more than 2GB if use Vista. 6. optical drive. CDRW or DVD-ROM or DVDRW? 7. video card. Any particular brand like ATI, Intel, NVidia, ... The more important consideration is the video memory. Is it shared with the system memory or has own display memory? Dedicated display memory is better. For normal use, 128MB video memory should be sufficient. Might need more for Vista. 8. wireless connection. Which protocol is supported? 802.11 a/b/g or Wireless-N. Wireless-N is compatible with most wireless access router and higher speed, but more expensive. 9. bluetooth support. Do you need this to connect to handphone, PDA, camera, printer, headphone, etc? 10. battery. 2 major considerations: how fast can it charge, and how many hours can it run without A/C supply? 11. carry case or backpack. Backpack is more convenient, but cost higher. 12. built-in webcam. Do you need this? 13. harddisk. Don't worry about the capacity, normally is enough. Better ask the vendor to format into 2 partition, and use the 2nd partition for data storage and system backup for recovery. 14. mouse or touch screen. Touchpad is more difficult to control, get a mouse (cheaper solution) or buy the laptop with touch screen feature. 15. tablet PC feature. Some laptop can turn and flip the screen to become like tablet PC. Do you need this? 16. built-in modem. You need this when there is no broadband. It is also handy to fax out documents using fax software. 17. LAN port. 100Mbps or gigabit? For home use, 100Mbps is enough. For use in office, if have gigabit network, then gigabit port is preferable. 18. All-in-1 card reader. To read SD, XD, and other memory cards. Good to have to store pictures from camera. 19. Other considerations, like skin colour, docker base, etc. With your budget, I recommend Dell Inspiron 1420. |

Bro Clement, I agree with Sifu OCMax, Compaq also never fail me.. Pretty good and reliable..and "LOOK" Good But my battery almost "kong"...( 2 year ++) Using everyday In term of service also not bad.. Take to HP center at Bkt Damansara.. Less than 4 days can settle for me.. This is what i experience.. :P But in term of service, DELL is better :D Make the Right Decission ya ! |

i've been using Dell for many years in my work and it never fails me. I'm pretty much satisfied with it. recently i just raise the purchases from Dell. 1 for work (company one) and another one use at home (for my wife). bro ppchong spelled out the points to be considered before you make the decision. So, make the choice that meet your requirements. |

Laptop battery got lifespan of about 1000 charge cycle. Lifespan will get shorter if overcharged. Modern battery is intelligent enough to detect if it is fully charged, and thereafter the laptop will use the A/C power directly at the same time stop charging the battery. This will prolong the battery life. The Dell Inspiron has this feature, I believe Compaq also has. Some laptop will keep on charging the battery as long as the A/C power is plugged. That is the reason some people will suggest to take out the battery from laptop when using A/C power, to lengthern its lifespan. |

Dun worry about bluetooth. U can always get an external bluetooth device for less than RM100. After that got bluetooth liao. Built in one is nice, because no need to carry so many things along. But just like Avz, if something not built in one, can get from after market. ;) |

One more important step tweaking the os to perform faster. Dont use the default preinstalled os. Resinstall and configure youself. Believe me no matter what you buy after tweaking ur notebook will perform in top speed. I recently bough a amd semprom LE1100 processor which is the lowest processor range and i load it with vista it perform very well. I also buy dual core and my conclusion everage user dont need that actualy even playing games the cpu only use arroungd 20 to 30% of its capacity. For ordinary user just remember to get 2 gig ram too be at safe side for future. Try to get without microsoft os..... |

Dell Vostro got the bluetooth in the wireless option. Wireless Wi-Fi Options: Intel® Pro/Wireless 3945 802.11 a/g Mini Card Wireless Intel® 4965AGN Wireless-N Mini Card Bluetooth Options: Bluetooth Module (2.0 + Enhanced Data Rate) Most models include the bluetooth module as "compulsory" option. :rolleyes |

go for all lastest software especially Wifi. Had experienced before. Bought Fujitsu lap top, but the wifi is not the latest wifi software. So after using for few months. The wifi always give problems. So get those that come with all new software like latest windows, intel, and etc. |

it all depends on you clement.. before deciding, u have to ask urself, what do you want to use the laptop for? like ocmax, he is a heavy cad user, so he would prefer a notebook with huge screen.. BIG RAM, and fast processor, and good graphics card. now im in sales, i very much prefer a small notebook, easy to carry, light weight, LONG BATT LIFE. you mentioned that you took up a part-time course.. GOOD FOR YOU. what course are u doing? if its related to engineering, graphics design, programming, you'll need power. last intel processor and top of the line graphics card is recommended.. if you took up business, accounting, management, marketing, a celeron would be more than enough, since their most power comsuming application would probably be database & SPSS or similar programs.. OOOH.. and matlab.. honestly, the 'branded' computer's built quality is similar.. all very good (except acer.. i have very bad experience with their desktops (long time ago i bought an acer desktop, P3-500MHz on windows 98) and acer has one of the worst after sales service, including their service centre in glenmarie. warranty service or aftersales service, DELL WINS. others, not bad too.. but only dell is willing to fix the computer for you on the spot, no matter where u are.. even if ur dining in starbucks, or local chao kuay tiao stall.. they will come rain or shine to fix it for u. |

You are right about acer desktop pc but their notebook is good also. Actualy all notebook is about the same cause the notebook mainboard manufacturer is monopoly by 2 or 3 manufacturer only. HP IBM acer just put in the casing and other stuff only. Most important still support service. |
