Freeware - No usage fees or license purchase
Shareware - Need To Purchase licenses or Keys
- Normaly come in 30 days trial period

But one thing in common many freeware and shareware will install spyware, toolsbar and etc
without user even knowing it, hence open up your pc for other security vulnabilities.

For Freeware which i tested is pure freeware and no other spyware or toolsbar is install i will put
it green color.

If members also tested and confirm is pure freeware let me know also.
Or else i will test and let u guys know.

Beside all those Windows, Office Suite, Entertainment Software and etc
there is 3 category of software which is important to protect yourself from
virus, spyware and hackers.

1/Firewall - (Control Traffic In Out to detect unknown network activity
before it enter your pc system)
a/ Zone Alarm - So far the most efficient and easy to use but consume memory

2/Antivirus - (Scan And Clean Virus whioch already enter your pc system)

a/ Avast Antivirus - http://www.avast.com
b/ Avira
c/ AVG Anti - Virus

3/Spyware - (Scan And Clean Spyware which already enter your system)

a/ Ad Aware 2007 - http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php
b/ XP-AntiSpy - http://xp-antispy.org

c/ SUPERantispyware
d/ Spybot-Seach & Destroy
e/ Advanced Windows Care V2 personal

Just to share this info,

In the past I was using Avast Anti-virus and AVG for all my office' computers but found it not effective enough as I was still ATTACKED so badly by the Sohanad Worm that I have to format ALL.... and I mean ALL of the PCs in my office. :angry :angry

One PC that was not affected have effectively stopped this virus using AVIRA. And it is quite good at detection. Also, its free. :thumbup

You guys could try it... :thumbup :thumbup

Eversince I changed my OS to Ubuntu Linux, no need to worry about virus or worm problem again.

Consider moving to Ubuntu Linux if you use your computer mostly for web surfing and Office desktop (word processing, spreadsheet, presentation). You can do the same in Ubuntu with Firefox and OpenOffice.org (can also read/write MS-Office documents as well as write to PDF files).

If you use your computer for gaming, then, perhaps still need to stick with Windows, and continue worrying about virus and worms.

By the way, you can request for the original Ubuntu CD totally free of charge, from the following website:

Last few days ago my PC was infected by a virus, All the .exe file in the window are all infected. My Nod32 antivirus failed to detect or flter it before the virus spread to my other folders....:angry2

The last result I have to format my hd and reinstall my windows but my 2nd drive virus was clean by AVG pro....

I think AVG is pretty good for my case.

Using antivirus or spyware only will not help much cause is to detect spy or virus after it infect ur pc.

Thats why i recemend Zone Alarm that will ask ur permisiion if any programme or software try to contact outside world.

As Seizai mention it consume memory true but i expect that most user now with qat least 512mb above. And to overcome slow pc issue i will post the way to clean rubbish in ur pc automaticaly later when i free.

For linux i think not suitable if u r not familair with pc as during setup u might have problem. I have Fedora Liux CD if u all want.

For Edvanza ur office consider getting fortigate FG 50 firewall come with Antivirus scan and some control over downloading file will prevent u from virus attack cause by user issue.

Actually, Ubuntu has been specially tailored to be very easy to setup, autoupdate, and very similar user interface with Windows. Its setup is even easier than Win XP/Vista. And with Ubuntu, I can always announce my PC has 100% legal software :wacko , no need to hack/crack or spend numerous $$ for the OS and software anymore.

Info to share.... when my office PCs all kena theSohanad virus, it attracts itself to .exe files and goes into 'AUTO-LAUNCH'. I think the file most commonly affected is called SVCHOST.exe

Those affected PC will find that the name of this file has been changed to SVHCOST.exe. It will then multiple and spread the moment a new application is opened.

Once infected, the symtoms is that it will CONTROL your REGISTRY, preventing you from changing anything or logging onto the registry.....

Is a backdoor virus system, even u have best antivirus also uselees cause when it first strike the antivirus also dont know. U can prevent by using firewall so that it will not download the virus file to ur pc and start spreading.

The best to prevent this is dont open mail that u dont know.
Make sure ur pc if using winxp it is service pack 2.

Have u tried any other Linux distributions like Redhat & Mandriva? Which one is more user-friendly & do u use KDE as interface?

FYI I'm currently using Mandrake (Now renamed to Mandriva) Linux as my back-up (alternate boot), if my WinXp fails I switch to Linux at boot time.

svchost is a vital file for windows OS.. similar to ECU for our avanza.. its literally what it means.. Service Host.. a host for window's services.. like printer spool service etc..

AVG is a very effective antivirus.. and has even scored better against big industry players such as nortan anti-virus and mcafee..

one one thing about AVG, is that it cant detect worms properly.. thts y it comes bundled with internet security/firewall.. but thts only for avg pro..

what i do, is use AVG Free, with another VERY GOOD freebie: Windows Defender..

Hi,

Ubuntu Desktop 7.04 is one CD, the ISO is about 700MB.

It is a bootable live CD by itself, and once bootup, you have a nice desktop equipped with OpenOffice.org and some other major apps. You also can find a menu option called "Install" to install the OS into the harddisk.

Once installed into the harddisk, thousands over apps can be downloaded and installed with the Synaptic Manager.

I was shifting all the way from Slakeware to Redhat to Mandrake to Ubuntu. Mandrake is good for running server, because it has a very well organised directory structure. Mandriva has too many steps during installation, almost the same no. with Windows installation. Ubuntu has far less steps to get it up and running.

Actually, it is a good practice to set your normal login user account to be limited normal account without administrator permission.

The normal account will not have enough permission to change svchost file, and hence you are much more safer.

Thanks for sharing, that means if the Windows OS (including boot sector) completely destroyed by virus, we could still pop in Ubuntu desktop CD, boot up & work, surfing or gaming?

If so, I don't even need to hv a dual boot system....btw, I just downloaded the Mandriva DVD iso, all 4GB of it, shd be able to serve as boot CD.

Yes, the live CD will not make use of your harddisk. But due to the space limitation on the CD, only minimal applications are made available.

There aren't much fantastic games in the Linux world yet, not for those running on DirectX.

864 games and amusement software packages are available for download and install, out of the total 21,492 overall software packages available for Ubuntu 7.04 (figure from Synaptic Package Manager as per today).

You can run Windows apps with WINE. I have my IE6 browser running in Ubuntu too.

Install Beryl, and you can have fantastic desktop manipulation effects, of which some fancy being copied by Windows Vista lately.

To me OpenOffice and Firefox are 2 very useful softwares in Linux.

Tried Ubuntu but found that it's quite restricted as one log in as normal user. It bars u from *root* by default. Din have time to explore it yet. If run on live CD is *slow*. :deem

If you all wanna experient thse things, good to use VMware. With today's powerful PC, performance in VM is not an issue lio. Not good for games though. If really scared of viruses, spyware etc, one can always run on top these VMs and make a backup copy; whatever happen just delete the old 1 and copy back the backup ... Ta Ra ..you have a clean new OS.
