hi guys need advice. i've got a job offer, after tendering my resignation, my boss gave me a counter offer. let me know your thoughts on the following points. PS: i'm hoping that typing this post will also help me think Future Job - large multi-national company, highly structured - no idea who'll be immediate boss (gonna be a new department) - career prospect seems better, will get exposure to different management aspects - gonna start from scratch - new company offer more than 30% above my current pay Current Job - small multi-national company, but recently acquired by fortune 500 american company - immediate boss is one-rung below GM of global operations, is very good, the best manager i've ever had (i have had many) - currently company is overloaded, generally people very low morale, but future potential is great with acquisition by huge american co (i'd expect things to improve in 3 to 5 years time) - career prospect in near future is not really good, but expect to be better after 3 to 5 years - enjoy seniority in company - boss counter offer same amount as future job care to share your thoughts on this? |

Have to know the new company background. some more, it is better if the company oredi operated more than 5 years ;) than you can know the better company background, about the company business, and the payment :thumbup |

I'll only switch job only if: - the relationship with the boss is in red light - company is not doing good - future career perspective is not good for existing company - keep repeating the same daily task , no new things to learn If those problems do not exist, i'll not switch the job. Who know whether the new company is really better than existing one? The money is not the only thing that need to be considered. So, you have to make your own best decision. |

It seems that both are good options with the 1st one more attractive to me :) You are in good position now bcoz you are the one who deside. If i were you, i'll go for new job becoz expect good propects in future could still be uncertain. |

just a simple advice... after you tender your letter, it means you already make a decision :P if you stay, a black mark will always be in your boss brain :P |

agreed... sometimes counter-offer doesn't always give you a better future. often, ppl who accepted counter offer will be put in cold storage, leaving them without promotions and increament, cause the boss already labeled them... betrayal... I had similar experience also when I tendered my resignation letter. my boss offered same salary, but I decided to go and I happy with the current job (almost 7 months already). Most people scared to leave their convenient working environment, but that is a chance (or risk) that you have to take. New job, new boss, new environment, new girls to flirt over... :boo :boo Personally, I am happy with my new job and hope you will be happy with whatever decision you will take |

hi all, many thanks for your advice. i've been with this company for nearly 6 years. my boss is very good, he has taken good care of me for many years now. there were times (especially when i was new), i made a few mistakes, the client raised a big hoo-hah to the directors in London, he shielded me from all the bricks and bats. he's really a good boss, and i'm reluctant to leave. he promised that if i reconsider, this 'resignation' will be completely forgotten. well, i guess, since i've already tender my letter, i better stick to it ... be a man of my own words! :P it's really sad to leave my current job, but i will have to look ahead. |

In my working life, I have had quite a few good men who resigned but I managed to convince to stay on, some even without any promise of salary adjustment. With or without adjustment, I always appreciated those who stayed on for me, and I always kept a lookout for them for promtion opportunities. Once a promotion opportunity arose, they were the first people to come into my mind. Your present boss looks like a good guy. You may want to think hard before you make a final decision. Unless your company performance(profit) is very bad or the working environment is teruk, or stress of working there is very high, then you may want to find out first why you want to leave. Just an old man's 2 cents......! Good Luck! |

In my opinion you will need to be sure what do you expect from your carreer path, monetory may not be the only factor if your destination has not reach yet. If you are aiming to managerial level then is good you can stay slightly longer, unless you are already there. Not many company will take "fresh" managerial personnel from external, mostly is internal promotion. With this "license" your carreer path has broaden. The final aim for most the people is still the overall beneficial that one can get from the company they attached to. You are fortunate because you have a good superior, but you must know also whether he can assist you to move up on your carreer path. Increase in salary without increase in job responsibility sometime may not be a good thing, unless you are already reach top of your carreer path. Carreer achievement versus salary must strike a balance, and only youself will know what is your expectation. May be you should ask your superior what is his plan for your carreer path if you stay, then compare with potential carreer path for new job. Hope this assist you. |

My opinion..............Always look back from where you start. Why you joint the current company and have been working for 6 years? Is it because of new salary which make you resigning or looking for challenging jobs or you are not happy with someone? Remember that money alone will not satisfy everybody. My experience in current job for 25 years and this is the 3rd. company after the previous two sales & marketing company. I move from previous ones due to job development and improvement then found this company which I am happy with its working environment. So, make your own choice as be happy with what you do. All the best. :yipee :yipee :yipee |

Just a personal experience. I have been working in the same company for almost 2 decades now and many a times i feel very tired especially so if working in a multinational company. For us every 3~4 years change top management and other senior managers <all jepun> and it's really tough for me coz i always report to jepun so imagine i have start to build up rapport and confidence ever so often. Reputation of course carry on thru the years so it makes it tougher to prove your worth as they expect more and more from you. I dont classify myself as a workaholic and neither am i hardworking ... curi2 masuk forum n YM :wacko . Sometimes i also wonder why i never switched company???? I had many offers along the way and even been head-hunted a couple of times but yet i am still around. I was very reluctant to move and the japanese work culture has really gotten under my skin. When a person gets too comfortable in their position and with age advancement, it makes it harder to leave. I think i have worked here too long and some times really feel burned-out. If one is still young and energetic, unhappy with the current working situation or environment, company stability is questionable or feel stagnant in your career path then by all means you should take on the new challenge to move forward. But if it's only monetary advancement then should consider whether you are be happier here or at the new company. Rapport with fellow colleages are not built overnight. It takes time and effort. Once you have made up your mind to leave, forget about the counter offers. Why when you are still around they dont give you this and that, only when you say you are leaving they start to offer you? Dont be illusioned by the counter offers. The company wont wrap-up when you leave. It's just that they want to have minimal disruption and all managers are very selfish. They dont want their 'star' employee to leave them as they are so comfortable with them and they are the result producers and helped them move up the ladder. These type of people makes lousy managers but of course not all of them are lousy if they give you sound advice and genuine concern for your well being. Always remember NO ONE IS INDISPENSIBLE. :no :ghost |

hi all, i'm really really very appreciative of all of you here to give such good advice and share your thoughts/experience. :tqvm :tqvm :tqvm i had another long phone conversation with my current boss on friday. he offered me lots of sweet deals, but i've decided to turn down the counter offer. i guess to summarize it all.... i have turned down a comfortable job with a very good boss n nice pay, to go take on a different role in new company with bigger challenges. to be frank, i haven't been improving myself over the past 2 years, so by moving to new company, i'm going to be challenging and stretching myself to new limits. it's like i left my safety net and move into a new world... i just hope i still have the stamina to survive. i'm going to be tough, but i guess sometimes, we just need to take risks. PS: i really hope i'm making the right decision :sweat |

Whether you have made a right decision, it all depends on you now. Do not look back and regret what you have decided but look forward to all the challenges and opportunities you have in future. I am sure if you are prepared to work hard and smart, the sky is the limit for you. BTW, keep a good relationship and rapport with your current boss that you are leaving and thank him/her for all the great experiences and time you had. You would not want to burn the bridge after crossing it and who knows when the two of you might cross each others path again in the future. So, a big congratulation to you and wish you all the best in your career advancement. Good luck and take care. Regards, edyeap |

Initially, you most probably had plans to move on when you first applied for a new job. Take its challenge and move out from your comfort zone. There's brighter and newer horizons to conquer. Take my case for example, 12 different companies in a span of 16 years before venturing out on my own for the last 7 years. :thumbup Do not let your current boss tantalise you by tickling your b***s. :sorry |

if for me base on your 2 company profile... I will choose the 2nd one... as it's a new department which you consider as the pioneer of that team/department... 2ndly.. the company is large multinational company which will have better perspective in job security and benefit... But the rest of the opinion from our fellow friend are all golden words from their experience... |

bro jaycee, i think you have made a wise decision for moving to greener pasture since you feel that you could go no further at the current company. Like edyeap's advice, never ever burn your bridges once you have crossed them. The earth is round so you are bound to meet your ex-boss or colleagues some how or rather. Be appreciative and always remember what you have gained today was due to the opportunity given to you in your previous company. Wish you all the best in your new job. :) |

hi all, :thumbup thank you all for your generosity! the AOCM family :iloveu2 just to put in some nice words for my current boss.. he tried his best to make me stay but when he couldn't, he was gracious enough to help me go. he even made it a point so that other department managers didn't give me a hard time. [DARN! i'm gonna lose such a nice boss] i'm really trying to leave in very good terms. in fact, currently i'm still working my socks of for my current company. since late saturday evening, i have been on the phone for conference calls with my (gonna-be-ex) clients in Europe for some hardware upgrade. next n hopefully final conf-call is at 2.30am. i checked my emails, seems that on late friday evening, my boss has arranged for me, my last day to be on 14/02. so on Valentine's Day, i'm gonna say goodbye to all my good friends in my company and pack my stuff... :( :( start work immediately on 15/02.... :ghost |
