By bro penguin_bar Posted: 2 Dec 2005, 06:51 PM It is normal that everytime when someone comes out with a modification topic, someone else will naturally ask that same question, 'Will it void the warranty?' I am creating this thread just to discuss this issue in general and serve as a purpose to give guidelines on modification as this warranty issues applies to all type of modifications. This thread will then become a common warranty thread for reference. In general, the policy of voiding the warranty if we do modification is a good one. To manufacturer, it protects their liability, to us, it ensure that we don't just do modification blindly. At the same time there are certainly safety concerns that we need to look at. Hence with this warranty in mind, we would be very careful with what we modify making sure that nothing breaks. Let assume we wait until warranty period expires to do our modifcation. Are we saying that after 3 years or when we reach 100,000 km mileage, we are now prepared to pay the replacement cost of that faulty parts due to what we have modified. What if it is going to cause us a bomb? I personally think warranty validly play a good role yet. It polices the modification regulations. Another way of looking at the question is to ask ourselves whether with what we are going to do, will it break other components of the car rather than whether it will break the warranty agreement. Of course it would be more unfortunate under the following circumstances -: We have modified something that certainly would not anyhow break other components but if a component suddenly become faulty due to some other reasons such as component's bad quality during manufacturing, then we would have hard time to argue our case with UMW simply because they can relate it with our modification even though that is not the actual root cause of that component failure. Doing a non-destructive modification within warranty period would also give us good return on investment. If I paid RM 1000 for a modification I am ejoying for 5 years before selling my Avanza, then that would be a good return. However if I spend RM 1000 after 3 years period and use the car for another 2 years before selling it, maybe I should have a second thought on this modification since it would not be a good investment to do so. So, in general, we should be more worried about how the modification would affect the car rather than whether it will void the warranty. We might modify our Avanza braking systems and it voids the warranty. However, when the braking systems fail, it is the lost of life that is more horrifying then the void of warranty for we can always replace parts, but not life. So next time when we come out with modifications, the question on whether it would void the warranty can be seen as serving a good deterrence - do it only if it is proven safe to do so to both life and money. |
